12/6/08 Update

Dear loved ones -

I wanted to let you know that I am slowly responding to emails individually but I wanted everyone to have a quick update while I have a minute today. I finally completely stopped the steroid treatments this week and it has really been nice to not have the side effects - the hot flashes and the screwed-up sense of taste. I had a very productive and busy week at work and trying to get more stuff unpacked in the new apartment because I really wanted to take advantage of feeling pretty good.

On Monday, the nurse will be at our house at 10 a.m. to train both me and Steve on mixing the medication and giving me the shot. I will unfortunately then have my first shot right before I go to work - which is unfortunate because they recommend doing the shots at night so that you can sleep through the worst side effects. Wish me luck! After that first shot, then I will be able on Wednesday to do the shot at night.

The medication, Betaseron, is known to give lots of flu-like side effects, so it might not be much fun. The one plus is that I will gradually up the dosage to the full dose - so I will start with 1/4 of the regular dose. That might help with the side effects. I have been feeling pretty good physically since coming off the steroids. Going home for the holiday really helped psychologically speaking - and all your emails, phone calls, cards, thoughts, and prayers have helped tremendously. It's easy to NOT feel alone right now.

Thank you so much for keeping me in your thoughts and loving me and supporting me. As this disease and treatment progress I know I will have to learn to ask for, and accept, all that love and support and help in a much greater way. Thank you all for being up for that. In case anyone missed getting my contact information (some people have been emailing me about it) - my cell phone is always the best way to reach me (773) 368-1676 and my mailing address is 4902 N. Magnolia Ave. Apt. 2 Chicago, IL 60640. Steve has been wonderful and strong through this - if you ever need to reach him, his number is (231) 420-2108. I will probably get to each of my individual emails this week provided I'm not feeling tremendously awful from the medication.

If you don't hear from me soon, you will...I love you all
